What’s better: bio balls or ceramic rings

Whats better: bio balls or ceramic rings

One of the most common questions raised from our head is whether we should choose bio balls or ceramic bio rings for our aquarium. While we obviously have our own ideas, the answer isn’t always black and white. Both of these filters are designed to perform differently and before we get into that, it’s important to know the two types of bacteria that these two filters are designed to clean out.

Nitrifying bacteria-- eats ammonia and nitrates

Denitritying bacteria--eats nitrates

Bio balls only eradicate nitrifying bacteria; ceramic bio rings can do both.

Then you might probably thinking ceramic bio rings are better, while this is not a “one or the other kind of thing”. Let me list some pros and cons for both of them:

Bio balls:

Pros: holes are easily to be cleaned

Cons: only be used for biological filtration only.

Ceramic bio rings:

Pros: can clean wide range of bacteria

Cons: its’ pores are easily to be clogged

Now, what should be noted is that bio balls shouldn’t be seen as a panacea for all your filtration needs. Bio balls should only be used for biological filtration only. They simply exist to trap and remove waste. Ceramic rings will ultimately trap more bad stuff, but your bio balls will ultimately do a better job of denitrifying bacteria.
